The transition to a\u00a0circular economy\u00a0is a tremendous\u00a0opportunity\u00a0to transform our economy and make it\u00a0more sustainable, contribute to\u00a0climate goals\u00a0and thepreservation of the\u00a0world\u2019s resources, create\u00a0local jobs\u00a0and generate\u00a0competitive advantages\u00a0for Europe in a world that is undergoing\u00a0profound changes. The importance of the circular economy to European industry was recently highlighted in the renewed EU industrial policy strategy1. The transition to a circular economy will also help to meet the objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development2.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

In the circular economy action plan3, a circular economy is explained as an economy \u2018where the value of products, materials and resources is maintained in the economy for as long as\u00a0possible, and the generation of waste minimised\u2019.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

One way of looking at the circular economy is to see how materials enter, flow within and (eventually) leave the economy. Such a visual overview can be provided by a material flows diagram, which shows all raw materials\u00a0\u2014aggregated as well as grouped by categories of materials\u00a0\u2014\u00a0throughout the economy, from their extraction until they become waste.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
